JCAA

President's Report

by Rich Esposito

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association July 2001 Newsletter)

Please be advised that during the June 26th general membership meeting we will be voting on the bylaw changes needed to help with the JCAA obtaining a C3 tax status. As we have been reporting the last two months, this change will benefit both JCAA and our sponsors in many ways. It is imperative that as many club representatives as possible attend this, the last general membership meeting of the summer. The next general membership monthly meeting will not be until September 25th and we cannot wait until September to vote on this. We will continue to hold Board of Directors meetings during this summer.

I’d like to thank all those who donated their time and effort towards making this year’s 7th Annual Jersey Coast Fluke Tournament an overwhelming success. We had the most entries that we’ve ever had, and the good lord smiled down upon us, as the weather was fabulous.   I’d also like to thank all of the sponsors who gave the prizes, the weigh stations and weighmasters, for without them it would not be possible to stage an event of this magnitude.   This goes to show what we can accomplish with a lot of effort and cooperation.  Last, I want to thank those who entered the tournament.  Without you it would not be a success. Judging by the size of the fish weighed in, many of the entrants were rewarded with some outstanding fishing

If you are not already aware, the Menhaden Bill, A3512, was voted out of committee, with most of the committee members voting in favor of it.  I want to thank those who attended the rally in Trenton in support of the bill. It received a great deal of media attention and press coverage. This really helped us move the bill out of committee.  I wish to thank the Salty Dogs of War for organizing the rally and keeping the pressure on our legislators.  Please do not think the battle has been won.  We still must continue to write and email state politicians, making them aware of how the recreational fishing and environmental communities are in favor of the removal of the reduction boats from our state waters.

I am a bit disappointed that as of this writing I have yet to get a volunteer to head this year’s Sportsperson of the Year Dinner/Dance. What must I do? Why must we constantly depend on the same individuals year after year to do the work? I assure anyone who might be a bit hesitant about volunteering that there will be plenty of help from those of us who care. We are not looking to dump and run, and I do not want to ask someone who already does a lot for the JCAA.  Please, if you can spare some time, let me know.

Last weekend I attended the committee meeting for this year’s Governor’s Tournament. The tournament will be held on October 7th.  We will be filling you in on the details as we get nearer to the fall. I was pleasantly surprised how much this event has grown in just a few short years. I hope to see you there.
