PRESIDENT’S REPORT

By Mark Taylor

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association December 2000 Newsletter)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

On November 12, we had our Awards Dinner during, which we honored this year’s “Sportsperson of the Year” and “2000 Youth Education Award”. At the dinner we had Penny Dalton, Head of National Marine Fisheries Service as keynote speaker. I would like to thank Penny for making time for us by attending and addressing the nice crowd we had.

The Sportsperson of the Year recipient was the entire staff of The Fisherman Magazine. At the dinner to accept the award was Pete Barrett, the Associate Publisher and Linda Barrett, General Manager of The Fisherman Magazine. Pete said a few words about the magazine and their continuing dedication to protect the resource for years to come.

The 2000 Youth Education Award went to Tom Fote for all the years of dedication to promote youth education. This is an important award because without the youth being educated properly, the future of the resource will be lost. Tom accepted this award with the understanding that his wife Lynda will accept also. Tom said a few words that meant a lot to us that we take for granted. He talks about the support, understanding and contribution that his wife gives him. Without that he would not be able to do all the things he does. This is true for all of us that are married. I would like to thank my wife, Maureen, for her understanding and support over the years. All of you should take the time to say thank you to your spouse and show your appreciation for their understanding. Both recipients are well deserving of these awards.

Thank you all that attended the dinner and showing your continued support of JCAA. The dinner was a success thanks to Rich Esposito, Tom Siciliano and the Dinner Committee. Nice work!  Thanks to Ken Kaufman from Canyon Gear won the large 50-50 and donated in back to JCAA.

A special thanks goes out to the clubs who aided our cause by purchasing tables for the evening. Although I’m pleased to announce the names, I’m also a little disappointed over the relatively small amount. Those clubs who did support us by   buying tables were the Fish Hawks, the Manasquan Fishing Club, the Newark Bait and Fly Casting Club, the Saltwater Anglers of South Jersey, the Saltwater Anglers of Bergen County, and the New Jersey Federation of Sportsmen’s Club’s, Inc.

It is the time of the season that people start thinking of going to shows. Jersey Coast Anglers Association will have a booth at two shows to in order inform the public as to what we are all about. We need members to volunteer their time to man the booths. So if you believe in what we are doing at JCAA as much as I do, give us a call. The two shows are, Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen’s Show at The New Jersey Convention Center in Edison on January 11-14 and The Atlantic City Sportsmen Show on January 26-28. We will be selling our yearly High Roller Raffle so get your tickets. Hope you will be able to help and attend the show.

There was a change in our meeting night for the month of December only due to the holidays. The meeting for December will be Wednesday the 20th at the same location as all our meetings. We will be voting on new officers for JCAA. So if you are interested in becoming an officer contact me ASAP. See you at the next meeting and stay involved.
