Jersey Coast Anglers Association has always welcomed the input of all recreational fishermen and has been pleading for people to join up and get involved. JCAA works hard every day to represent all recreational fishermen the best we can with what we have. There are some very important issues that have arisen in some of the species that we need to stay on top of. That’s why we need more people to get involved with committees so we can have more dedicated individuals to help in the fight. If you are interest in getting involved call the JCAA office.Start whether you are interested in becoming an officer of Jersey Coast Anglers Association for the upcoming year. We have a few openings that need to be filled for the upcoming year, please contact the JCAA office or myself.
Reminder to mark your calendar for the Jersey Coast Anglers Association Sportsperson of the Year Awards Dinner, on November 14, 1999 at Crystal Point Marina. We need help with this dinner, so those interested please contact Don Marantz at 609-259-6368 (night) and Al Marantz at 732-224-9350 (day). We still need nominations for this year’s recipient. Nomination will still be accepted at the October’s General Meeting before the vote. The only name that was submitted so far is Penn Fishing Tackle Mfg. Co. There is a write up on Penn after my report. If you purchase a table at the dinner (10 tickets all at once) you will receive a discount. This means you will get 10 tickets for $600 instead of $750, this is a saving of $150 per table.
As you all know we are in the process of applying for a change in Tax Status, from 501-© (4) to 501-© (3) which will greatly benefit Jersey Coast Anglers Association in the fight to educate all. We need a By-law change to do that. We will be voting on this very important change at the October’s General Meeting. This is the proposed bylaw change. This change is at the end of the newspaper.
You may recall that in 1996 Vice President Al Gore agreed to end ocean dumping of contaminated muck and that the toxic stain in the ocean would be cleaned up by placing a clean cap over the contaminated areas. On September 1, 1997 Ocean dumping ended off the NY/NJ shores. There is an application for a permit to dump 90,000 cubic yards of tainted dredged material by Castle Astoria, Inc. at the former Mud Dumpsite off Sandy Hook. Jersey Coast Anglers Association along with others requested a public hearing on this very important matter. The Army Corps of Engineers granted the public hearing. The only public hearing on this application will be held at Fort Monmouth, NJ on October 20, 1999 in the Post Theater. The time of the hearing is 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to closing. I urge all to attend on this important matter. We need to keep our ocean clear of all toxic material. If you can’t attend the public hearing, we need you to write a letter to Joseph Seebode, Chief Regulatory Branch, New York District, Corps of Engineers, 26 Federal Plaza, New York, NY 10278-0090 by October 30th, in support of Jersey Coast Anglers Association and Clean Ocean Action’s position. WE NEED YOU TO PROTECT THE OCEAN
Penn Fishing Tackle has been nominated for Sportsperson of the Year. There are many reasons why Penn is being considered for this award. Penn has always been in the forefront, protecting marine resources around the world. They support many recreational and environmental organizations, including JCAA, IGFA, National Coalition for Marine Conservation, RFA, Fish America Foundation and the American Sportfishing Association. They are willing to send representatives to hearing and meeting and always speak up for the resource and recreational fishing. They are willing to travel to Washington to meet with Congressmen and Senators and let them know how important recreational anglers are to the economy. They are long time supporters of youth education programs including Hooked on Fishing not on Drugs here in New Jersey. Penn are a major sponsor of the JCAA Fluke Tournament and the Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament. By allowing one of their valued employees to represent Pennsylvania on the Mid-Atlantic Council, they have again shown their dedication to recreational anglers. With all of these actions, Penn has set a high standard for the rest of the industry.
