OLANDER PARKRecently, I returned from a fishing trip in Ohio and met some new fishing friends. I was teaching my sister fly fishing at Olander Park. Two youngsters fishing nearby noticed the equipment I was fishing with and asked if they could try fly fishing. The boys were very polite and well mannered. They asked their parents first if it would be all right to spend time with my sister and I to learn about fly fishing. After several attempts of trying to use the fly fishing equipment and some tangles they asked me to help set up their spin casting rods & reels to catch panfish. I let them use my spinning equipment while setting up their spin casting outfits and my sister assisted with unhooking their catch almost immediately.
The sun was setting and we were losing daylight quickly. I finally finished setting up their spin casting outfits and let them cast out the artificial jigs that were attached. Both boys commented, "Its much more fun to catch fish using lures" and thanked us for the help they received. The parents of the boys also offered their appreciation for the time that was spent to help set up their fishing equipment. It was a pleasure fishing Olander Park and truly another time to measure the fun not the fish.
Once a month the JCAA Youth Education Committee will be featuring youngsters fishing and family photographs on the JCAA web page. Click here to see this months Photo Gallery.
YOUTH FISHING ACTIVITY BULLETIN BOARD The Perfect Carolina RigFor the perfect Carolina rig, use three beads(big ones), two glass and one plastic, and assemble as follows: first thread on the weight , then two glass beads, then the plastic bead. Tie on the swivel, then tie the length of line with your hook and lure to the other side of the swivel. Add a drop of superglue to both knots, sliding the plastic bead down over the top knot.
