YOUTH EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT

The J.C.A.A. Youth Education Committee continues to send aquatic education material to schools, civic organizations, and environmental groups. This service is FREE and provided by the Jersey Coast Anglers Association Informational Library. Usage and loan of information has increased since 1990, therefore expanding the Jersey Coast Anglers Association Informational Library to other user groups and other states. We are now in the process of reorganizing the library and applying to the New Jersey Federal Surplus Supply Agency, for much needed office supplies and shelving. If our request is granted from this agency, we will need a truck to transport equipment from Edison, NJ to our office in Toms River. The J.C.A.A. Youth Education Committee will be assisting the NJ Division of Science and Research with the development of a lesson plan for the schools in the Newark Bay Complex. Key Concepts will include: History of environmental contaminants, Adverse Health Effects, Ecological Aspects, Geographical Aspects, Preventive Measures, and Continuing Activities. National Fishing Week June 5 - 11, 1995

Free Fishing Days in New Jersey are Saturday & Sunday June 10 & 11, 1995. Residents and non-residents may fish the public waters of New Jersey without a license or trout stamp. All other regulations apply.

Last year the J.C.A.A. Youth Education Committee, coordinated fishing and aquatic education programs for the week long celebration of National Fishing Week, Cast Across America 1994. The total number of participants were 855. This year we hope to extend the number of National Fishing Week participants from last year and encourage member clubs from J.C.A.A. to hold a youth fishing program during National Fishing Week. Member clubs that wish to conduct a National Fishing Week program, can phone in the number of participants in their event to the J.C.A.A. office. All National Fishing Week participant totals will be calculated and counted in the grand total for New Jersey. Two handicap access dedication ceremonies will take place for National Fishing Week. Island Beach State Park will dedicate the new handicap access ramp and Lake Riveria, in Brick Township will dedicate their new handicap fishing platform & parking area.

AQUATIC EDUCATION

Marie Frolio, JCAA Aquatic Education Coordinator, will attend the Coastal Workshop for Teachers at Wetlands Institute Stone Harbor, New Jersey May 20 - 21, 1995. Topics for the weekend workshop: Principles of Wildlife Management, Marine Resources and their importance to people, Wetlands and Wildlife, Delaware Bay Migration, Teachers Networking Session and Beast of the Barrier Islands. YOUTH ACTIVITY BULLETIN BOARD

• Dr. Eleanor Bochenek, New Jersey Sea Grant Agent, and members of the Jersey Coast Anglers Association's, Youth Education Committee, will present a youth fishing and aquatic education seminar Saturday, March 25, 1995 at the Atlantic City Power Boat Show. Children will learn about species identification, casting techniques, fish biology, fish handling, presentation of baits, and how to reel in a fish.

• New Jersey Symposium -- Friday evening, March 31, 1995, 8:00-10:00 p.m., Wilson Auditorium, Monmouth College, West Long Branch, NJ . Guest speakers will be Larry Saladove, author of "Great Storms of the Jersey Shore" and Mike Fahay, fish biologist, will show videos of "Submersible Observations of Just Settled Flatfishes on NJ's Continental Shelf". • April 2, 1995, Clean Ocean Action and the Nature Center of Cape May will host a Kids Fair. A Sea Lab exhibit will be on display for the day-long event, held in Atlantic City. Last year's Kids Fair attracted 10,000 people.

• April 1-2, 1995, Open house held at the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center on Rt. 46 in Warren County. Children and their families will learn about trout fishing and several environmental opportunities NJ has to offer.

• April 22, 1995 Earth Day - 25 Year Celebration, Photographs of environmental clean ups and activities throughout New Jersey will be featured at Rutgers, also the unearthing of a time capsule.

• Newark Bait And Fly Casters will host a Benefit Spaghetti Dinner for severely injured youth angler John Jacobsen, Sunday April 23, 1995 1 - 6 p.m. American Legion Post #229, 115 Grove Street, Roselle, NJ. Funds received from the spaghetti dinner will be used for medical expenses and the purchase of a modified fishing wheel chair. • May 13, 1995, TEACH AT THE BEACH, will be held at Island Beach State Park, NJ. For further information, please write to the New Jersey Marine Education Association, C/O Maryanne Mognoni, 414 Third St., Union City, NJ 07087. Come out and join members of the Jersey Coast Anglers Association's, Youth Education Committee, that will support this fun event.
