HEY KIDS GET YOUR TACKLE READY

Well, before we know it, the winter will be over and we will travel to our favorite fishing spots to wet a line.  Now is the time to inventory your tackle box and replace lost/damaged tackle from last year.  You can also start to untangle lures, leaders and snelled hooks that have turned into something to catch you rather than a fish.  Keeping your tackle orderly improves the fishing experience and you don’t want to be fumbling around untangling tackle when the fish are biting.  Remember to examine your rod and reel for the following: monofilament line damage, properly lubricated reel, drag smoothness, worn or cracked rod guides, reel seat tension knob, and smooth operation of ferrules.  If you are not able to make the necessary rod/reel repairs, visit your local tackle dealer before the fishing season begins.  It is important to have repairs done before the fishing season starts, because tackle dealers have more time to look at your rod or reel and can suggest the proper service.  After all why stand in line at a tackle shop waiting for repairs to be done when you could be fishing.

“HOOKED ON FISHING NOT ON DRUGS” SPRING ORDER

The JCAA Youth Education Committee is planning to purchase drug awareness materials for our 2001 summer fishing programs.   If your fishing club/organization would like to utilize the Future Fisherman Foundation’s “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” drug awareness promotional materials.  Please phone 732-785-9278 or contact Greg Kucharewski at the next JCAA monthly meeting.   We will submit our HOFNOD 2001 order during the last week of April.  Sample HOFNOD materials will be available at the next two JCAA monthly meetings. Please encourage you club representative to bring back the information.

ATLANTIC CITY SPORTSMEN SHOW

Children attending the JCAA Youth Education Committee’s saltwater fly tying demonstration at the International Sportsmen Show, Atlantic City Convention Center, learned the basics of saltwater fly tying.  Several youngsters learned to tie saltwater flies for the first time and they were amazed how easy it was to create saltwater fly patterns using  “SUCCESS FLIES” material.

CHECKOUT THE BASS BARN WEB SITE.

I met some interesting fishing families at the International Fishing Show and they were really into learning about fishing.   They call themselves “Barners” and most of them have a nickname/username, like Ding, Striper Sniper, Bassaholic, BassVamp,  and Twin Ds.   Kids, after the homework is done, checkout The Bass Barn at http://www.thebassbarn.com.   This site is HOT and the fishing information is great.  You can learn about the best Bass plugs, environmental issues, how to rig eels, saltwater fly fishing, offshore fishing, and Delaware Bay information.  Remember to use good judgment on the Internet and follow parental on-line communication rules.

NEWARK BAIT AND FLY CASTERS

Members of the JCAA Youth Education Committee will present a crabbing seminar at the Newark Bait and Fly Casters’ March 6th monthly meeting.  Children and their families are welcome to attend. Please phone Don or Al Marantz for details 732-280-2643.
