The VIMS report, Virginias Commercial Fishing Industry: Its Economic Performance and Contributions, is based upon 1994 data. It details the characteristics of the commercial fisheries segments and the economic impacts associated with each.
Overall, commercial fishing generated 10,800 jobs in 1994 in for Virginia. These are full time equivalents, 2-3 times that number of people actually derived some part of their income from harvesting, processing, wholesaling, retailing or preparing and serving Virginia seafood.
These activities generated $465 million in sales for the state and $326 million in incomes for individuals and businesses.
