A great time was had by all the attendees at the Newark Bait and Flycasting Club Kids’ Fishing Night. Forty-six children learned about fish identification and received “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” goody bags from the JCAA Youth Education Committee. The Newark Bait and Flycasting members set up several learning stations for the youngsters and answered all their questions about fishing. This was the first time that the JCAA Youth Education committee tested out a new fish identification game for children called “Name That Fish.” We read questions from large cards that gave clues about saltwater and freshwater fish. Example: 1. I have many rows of teeth and lose lots of them just swimming around the ocean. 2. People are afraid of me…..especially if they see my dorsal fin cutting the water. 3..They made a movie about me. What kind of shark am I? Answer: Great White Shark “JAWS”.
Many thanks go to Eileen Smith, JCAA President and Paul Smith, Former Shore Surf Club President for assisting with all the activities for the children. The Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee has supported this event for approximately ten years and it was good to see some of the youngsters from past Kids Fishing Night helping out.
The Future Fisherman Foundation’s Tackle for Educators program was developed for industry partners to provide educators with high-quality equipment at prices below retail. These vendors support Future Fisherman Foundation’s mission to get more youth introduced to educational angling programs so they develop a love of the sport and respect for our natural resources. The Tackle for Educators page on the Foundation’s website includes recommendations on start-up equipment to help program managers outfit a new or existing fishing program. The discounts in equipment will help educators stretch their dollars so they can offer additional programs, new trainings and more resources to their community.
