(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association (October 1999 Newsletter)
We are looking forward to another successful event at Island Beach State Park on Sunday, October 3. Participating anglers will fish on Island Beach State Park from 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM.This annual event has become a fixture of the New Jersey fall surf fishing season for an increasing number of surf anglers and their families. Even though last year's event was held on a rainy day, over 1,100 anglers took part in the tournament. This is a fishing tournament that is enjoyed by the veteran surf fisherman as well as the novice angler. Anglers of all ages and levels of expertise take part and win in various categories in this tournament. If you are not already entered in the tournament, you can do so at the park after 5 AM. On October 3.
Special arrangements are made for handicapped anglers. Balloon tire equipped beach wheel chairs are available for anglers with disabilities. Volunteers will be on hand to assist any anglers with special needs who want to fish on tournament day. For further information and or to make arrangements for a handicapped angler please contact Greg Kucharewski at 732-840-9197.
Various sporting organizations, state agencies and Tournament supporters will have exhibits at the Pavilion throughout the tournament day.
If scheduling allows, Gov. Whitman is expected to appear at about 2 PM to present awards and prizes to the winning anglers.
Funds derived from the tournament have recently been granted to the JCAA Youth Education Committee for its various statewide presentations in conjunction with the "Pathways to Fishing" and "Hooked On Fishing-Not On Drugs" programs. Funding also will be granted to the Friends of Island Beach State Park for educational materials and field study equipment to use in support of the Barnegat Bay Kayak Tour and Environmental Education Enhancement Program.
These programs are designed to help make adults and children aware of the importance of a healthy and clean environment.
The JCAA Youth Education Committee promotes programs to introduce young people to fishing as a worthwhile hobby. Idle time can be used for fishing related activities rather than engaging in something undesirable such as drug or alcohol use.
We need your help! If you do not plan to fish in the tournament, we could use your help. We need owners of 4-wheel drive vehicles to volunteer as beach judges to measure the fish caught by tournament contestants. Judges are vital to allow the tournament to run smoothly and without problems.
To volunteer as a judge or for more information please contact Paul Smith at 732-899-2681 or Bob DeLeonard at 732-793-8080.
Tournament hats and t-shirts will be on sale in the Pavilion on Tournament day! There will be a limited number of these special items from Canyon Gear. The hats come with a special embroidered striped bass tournament logo. The t-shirts come with a printed pocket and a special 8th Annual Governors Surf Fishing Tournament design on the back. Dont forget to stop at the Pavilion before fishing to get your hat and shirt!
The NJ Division of Fish, Game & Wildlife will conduct a surf fishing seminar for women on Saturday October 2. This is the second year that a "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman" program will take place in conjunction with the Governors Surf Fishing Tournament. BOW participants who fish in the Tournament will have a chance to compete for a special award for the largest fish among their group.
