Youth Education Committee Report

by Greg Kucharewski

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association January 1994 Newsletter)

Let's celebrate FISHING CLUB APPRECIATION WEEK February 1 through 7.  Fishing Club Appreciate Week is a time to get involved and join a local fishing club or become more active in your own club activities. In support of this special week, the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association will host a free training program for fishing clubs in New Jersey that would like to learn how to teaching children and families the importance of aquatic conservation and the wholesome fun of sport fishing. New Jersey Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County and the JCAA are sponsors for the 1994 Youth Fishing & Aquatic Resources Informational Training Session. This seminar will be held at 6:00 PM, Feb. 5, 1994 at the Ocean County Extension Center, 1623 Whitesville Rd, Toms River, NJ 08755. For information call Marie Frolio, JCAA Aquatic Education Coordinator at 609-581-1683. This is a great way for your club to learn how to sponsor and promote youth education projects and fishing tournaments in the coming year.

Topics covered will include: How to organize Youth Fishing Tournaments; Community Fishing Programs; Future 21 courses; "Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs"

programs; Project Access (handicapped fishing access program); Swim Free 2000; Project Aquatic Wild; and how to promote National Fishing Week.  Directions to the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Building: From North Jersey: Garden State Parkway south to Exit 88 onto Rt 70 west to Route 527 (Whitesville Rd). Left on 527 and building is 4 miles on left. From South Jersey: Garden State Parkway north to Exit 83, which exits onto Rt 9. At the first light, go left onto Rt 527 (Whitesville Rd). Building is 1/4 mile on the right.

NEW IDEAS FOR FISHING FAMILIES: The JCAA Youth Education Committee is working on a model youth fishing tackle box and sports activity bag that will be featured at the 1994 Youth Fishing & Aquatic Resources Informational Training Session. Children sometimes become bored when fishing and need other activities to hold their interest. We are open for suggestions on what can be included into the sports activity bag (Frisbee's anyone) and youth fishing tackle box. Contact Greg with your suggestions. Major tackle and sporting good manufacturers have supported this idea with donations of equipment. Berkley, Flambeau, Red Ball Waders, General Sports Craft, Cook Bates, The Fisherman Magazine, Colby's, Sports Authority, Motophoto, Illuminator Lures, Netcraft, Rieadco Corp and Mustad, just to name a few.

JCAA will have All Sports America premium brand Coupon Books available at upcoming sports shows. Funds generated from the sale of these books benefit JCAA aquatic education and drug awareness programs. All Sports Coupon Books include over $1000 worth of savings coupons on name brand gear from fishing to camping, ball sports to team sports equipment.

JCAA's Youth Education Committee was the recipient of a $500 grant from the National Police Chief's Drug Task Force, Grant Selection Committee, 1514 P St NW, Washington, DC 20005. The funds will be used to purchase and distribute educational drug awareness support materials from the Future Fisherman Foundation to elementary school students as part of our youth education commitment.

The JCAA Informational Library has youth fishing, aquatic education and drug awareness materials available for fishing clubs, schools and civic organizations. Phone or write the JCAA Informational Library at our Toms River office to take advantage of this free service. If your fishing club is hosting a youth fishing contest or seminar, please inform a member of the JCAA Youth Education Committee and we will be happy to assist your efforts. Call Greg Kucharewski at 908-840-9197,  Marie Frolio at 609-581-1683 or Conrad Treusch 908-255-3622.
