President's Report

by Mark Taylor
(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association October 2025 Newsletter)

As this article is being prepared, the fishing seasons are shifting from summer to autumn, prompting recreational anglers to refocus their efforts and prepare tackle for targeting new species in the coming months. It is important not to overlook critical matters such as fishery meetings, which have direct implications for our recreational regulations. I have referenced these meetings in previous articles and email alerts.

Participation in these meetings—either by attending in person, submitting comments as an individual or club, or engaging through other means—is vital. I recognize that reviewing data and regulatory information provided by organizations such as NOAA, ASMFC, MAFMC, and NJDEP can be challenging. This is why the JCAA, local fishing clubs, and related groups make every effort to attend as many meetings as possible, although it requires significant commitment. Individual involvement and mutual support within our community are invaluable.

Currently, the main focus is Atlantic Striped Bass Addendum III of Amendment 7 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan. The process has involved several meetings, including a recent public hearing held in New Jersey on Tuesday, September 16 at Stafford Township Fire Company, 133 Stafford Ave, Manahawkin. For those unable to attend and interested in learning more, further information is available at this link.

The JCAA Striped Bass Committee convened an emergency hybrid meeting for member clubs on Tuesday, September 23rd at 7:30 PM. The in-person component was held at the Jersey Coast Shark Anglers Facility. During the meeting, JCAA Chairperson Paul Haertel systematically reviewed each option included in the Atlantic Striped Bass Addendum III. Attendees engaged in a comprehensive discussion, with the primary goal of ensuring that JCAA member clubs are well-informed and prepared to select their preferred options prior to the formal vote on the JCAA Position at the General Meeting scheduled for September 30th. The meeting provided valuable insight for all participants.

The meeting on September 30th at 7:30 pm is going to be an important one for your club representative to attend. We will be voting on a few items. As I mentioned, a formal vote on JCAA position on Atlantic Striped Bass Addendum III and the 2025 JCAA Sportsperson of the Year.

The Annual JCAA Sportsperson of the Year Dinner will take place on November 8th at the Captain’s Inn in Forked River. This distinguished event recognizes the 2025 JCAA Sportsperson of the Year as well as the Youth Education Award recipients for their valuable contributions. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a tricky tray raffle, a 50/50 raffle, and a silent auction featuring a variety of items. Included in the newsletter below is a formal nomination for Stan and Greg Cudnik submitted by the Village Harbour Fishing club. For further information, please read Dinner Chairperson John Toth’s article or contact him directly at (732) 656-0138.

With respect to membership, saltwater fishing clubs or individuals can contact JCAA Membership Secretary John Toth at (732) 656-0138 or tothjohn@verizon.net for details. Member clubs should provide updated information and dues to ensure proper meetings and fishery alerts.

Staying informed and involved is essential for those interested in supporting their local fishing community. Participation may include attending meetings, volunteering at events, or discussing relevant issues with others. Organizations such as JCAA are active in advocating for regulatory measures and resource management that impact recreational fishing. Community engagement can help address challenges and contribute to the maintenance of this activity. For more information, contact (732) 245-9445 or email mtsport64@aol.com.

JCAA is currently seeking new office space. As a 501(c)(3) association, we would appreciate any recommendations regarding available locations. If you have information or suggestions, please contact us at (732) 245-9445 or via email at mtsport64@aol.com.
