New Jersey Outdoor Alliance Report

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association December 2009 Newsletter)
A rally was held at the New Egypt Speedway by the NJOA on October 24th with the purpose of showing the politicians in Trenton that there are a lot of anglers and hunters in New Jersey and that we are very concerned about a number of issues that are affecting us. Unfortunately, while the enthusiasm for the rally was high, the severe weather forecast for very heavy rain put a damper on the event. While more were expected, approximately 800 hunters and anglers showed up with many of them wearing foul weather gear. NJOA’s Executive Director, Anthony Mauro,
called on a number of speakers (including JCAA’s Tom Fote) to talk about specific issues affecting the angling and hunting community. Both Democratic and Republican legislators were called upon by NJOA Executive Director Anthony Mauro to talk about how Trenton needs to better focus on the issues facing us. The last speaker was candidate for Governor Chris Christie who said he would support our goals and that he is a friend of the anglers and hunters in our state. He told us several times that he really appreciated our coming to the rally and that we still sat in our seats even though it was raining to hear him and the speakers that came before him.
In spite of the rain, enthusiasm remained high among hunters and anglers and that our presence was a show of unity between our two groups. While the rally had light to moderate rainfall, we were very lucky that the real heavy downpour occurred after the rally ended.
