A YEAR LATER AND WE ARE STILL WAITING

Last year, the following letter was sent to all New Jersey Legislators asking them to support bill S1778:

Dear Legislator,

The JCAA membership wants you to notify Governor McGreevey that you support Bill S1778/A2823 utilizing monies not from tax dollars but rather from a fund paid into by drug offenders.  On September 12th Senator Leonard Connors introduced a most important piece of legislation concerning the Hooked On Fishing - Not On Drugs program.  S-1778 would establish within the Division of Fish and Wildlife the HOF-NOD coordinator position and would fund the program with $200,000.  The funds would come from the Drug Enforcement and Demand Reduction Fund.  All the monies in that fund are from people arrested for drug offenses.  In this way, money gathered from people who use drugs is being put back into the communities to help prevent drug use.  We are asking for your support for S-1778.  The money in the fund can only be used for anti-drug/alcohol programs and support Bill S1778/A2823.  We received the most recent information from state FOIA records and currently there is 5 million dollars in the fund and only slightly over one million is slated for use this year.  Please make your plea to Governor McGreevey and ask him to support this worthwhile bill that is sure to make a difference to the youth of New Jersey that will participate in the “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” outdoor program.  Senate No. 1778 is sponsored by Senator Leonard T. Connors Jr., 9tth district.  Assembly, No. 2823 sponsored by Assemblymen; Christopher J. Connors, Jeffrey W. Moran and Robert J. Smith.  Thank you for your consideration, JCAA Youth Education Committee

NATIONAL FISHING AND BOATING WEEK 2005

Get ready for a week on the water!  National Fishing and Boating Week is June 4-12, 2005.  You can be part of this annual national effort by hosting or sponsoring an official National Fishing and Boating Week event.  It’s a great way to promote the joys of boating and fishing to people across the country and to turn your passion for the water into a promise for the future. Visit http://www.nationalfishingandboatingweek.org  for event ideas, planning materials and to register your event.  With the help of the Passport to Fishing and Boating Program you can even recruit volunteers that have never been fishing or boating before to help you with your event.  Passport is a hands-on, interactive program designed to teach families the basic skills needed to begin fishing and boating.  Materials include color posters, scripts detailing what to say and do, activity cards, a boat mat layout, and other teaching tools.  To download Passport materials free of charge or to order a Passport Materials Kit go to www.NationalFishingandBoatingWeek.org/Passport .  And remember to register your NFBW events online.  Even if you don't have full details yet, you can benefit from the free publicity being generated by our national media campaign. All you need is an event name, date, state, and contact person, and you can update event details as your event planning progresses.  Don't miss out on this free promotional opportunity for your event!  To receive an Event Planning kit or for more information regarding NFBW, contact Anne Minor at aminor@rbff.org  or (703) 519-0013 ext 108.  Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation,601 N Fairfax St, Suite 140,Alexandria, VA 22314,(703) 519-0013

YOUTH FISHING ACTIVITY BULLETIN BOARD

SPRING LAKE FISHING CONTEST

On April 2, 2005, opening day of trout season, members of the Shark River Surf Anglers will host another trout contest for children fifteen years old and under.  Hundreds of anglers are expected to circle around Spring Lake waiting for the start of opening day.  Don’t forget to get there early.  Otherwise you must park along the side streets of Spring Lake and walk a great distance to find a spot to fish.  Every year, the membership of the Shark River Surf Anglers spent a lot of time and energy to make this event a success.  Come out and enjoy some fishing fun and refreshments at the awards tent.

READING RALLY

On Friday, May 20, 2005 the JCAA Youth Education Committee will present a HOFNOD fishing and aquatic education program at Lanes Mill School, Brick, NJ in support of the school’s annual Reading Rally.

SPRING FISHING

During the early Spring, there are a number of places to try your luck fishing.  Try the following locations for winter flounder: Point Pleasant Canal- Bay Avenue – Pinebluff Ave., and by the bridges.  Manasquan Inlet- both sides are productive.  Shark River Inlet and Barnegatt Inlet- you might also hook into a Striped Bass if you are using worms, but fresh clams work well for both species..
