(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association October 2000 Newsletter)
For the new
millennium, environmental organizations, public health groups, sportsmen's and civic
organizations are joining together to protect New Jersey's waters, and the public
resources they support. As sportsmen you are more aware than most New Jersey citizens,
that our rivers, lakes, streams, bays and estuaries statewide, have long suffered from
pollution overloads. Fish consumption advisories, which caution against eating fish or
shellfish from most of New Jersey's waters, are issued annually by the N. J. Division of
Fish and Wildlife due to dioxin, PCB, Chlordane, and mercury contamination of our waters.
New Jersey is plagued with continued public health problems stemming from high pollution
levels in our drinking water.
Yet, between
1992 and 1996, 30 million pounds of toxic pollution was discharged into New Jersey's
waterways. In addition, over development and highway construction further jeopardize our
more pristine waterways.
Twenty-seven
years after Congress passed the Clean Water Act of
1972, New Jersey's waterways are overburdened with pollution. In our State, nine out
of eleven major water suppliers, serving 2.8 million people, draw their water from rivers
and streams designated unsafe for fishing and swimming.
The Clean Water
Now! This campaign is committed to
dramatically reduce water pollution in New Jersey by:
* Providing
strict standards to protect waterways and their ability to support aquatic life.
* Mandating a
30% reduction in water pollution from major polluters.
* Banning the
worst toxic discharges into drinking water sources
* Protecting
pristine watersheds from over development
You can be a
part of a broad-based campaign to call on Governor Whitman to take action to protect our
waterways. We are calling on all New Jersey sportsmen to join the CLEAN WATER NOW!
