PLENTY OF FAMILY FISHING FUN

The Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament will be held Sunday, October 1, 2000 at Island Beach State Park, New Jersey.  Don’t miss it! This fun event is the largest surf fishing tournament along the East Coast.  The J.C.A.A. Youth Education Committee will be coordinating fishing and aquatic education programs for children and their families during the surf fishing tournament.  Featured programs will include: “Fishing Line Hunt” by The Fisherman and Stren Line, “Catch the Orange Ruffy Fish” by the J.C.A.A. Youth Education Committee, “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” and “Distance Casting” by the Shore Surf Club, “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” by the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, along with a variety of informational booths that support the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament.

JCAA EQUIPMENT SUPPORT

During June, July and early August the JCAA Youth Education Committee was busy supplying JCAA member clubs and organizations with a variety of fishing/crabbing equipment to promote marine sportfishing.

Throughout the summer several organizations have borrowed fishing equipment and learning aids to teach youngsters about the joys of fishing.  The JCAA has also supplied drug awareness material from the Future Fisherman Foundation’s “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” program.  Our on-hand quantity drug awareness materials are now depleted and we are looking to replenish our supplies for upcoming outdoor sportsmen events and boat shows.  If your fishing club or organization is planning a youth fishing event for the fall of 2000 or the beginning of the year 2001 and will need sport fishing promotional material, please phone 732-785-9275 to let us know the amount of items needed for your event.

Keep in mind that we have 50 saltwater rods and reels available at Island Beach State Park.  The rods and reels are to be used by member clubs and organizations that would like to host a saltwater fishing class.

SEASIDE PARK, NJ SUPPORTS HOFNOD

The Borough of Seaside Park Recreation Department held their annual Summer Youth Fishing & Crabbing Tournament with a new twist this summer.  They introduced over 150 community youth to the “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs” program through their local Police Departments “D.A.R.E” program.

Several local merchants and Borough Officials support the Summer Youth Fishing and Crabbing Tournament program and volunteers provide fishing/crabbing assistance for novice anglers.

This years participants learned the fine art of Japanese Fish Printing (Gyotaku).  Through the guidance of New Dolphin B&T and The Fisherman staff, youngsters printed their own fish designs on t-shirts and were awarded the t-shirts as a souvenir.

JCAA furnished the “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs” materials as the local representative for the Future Fisherman Foundation. Several member clubs had “volunteers” on hand to facilitate the event: New Jersey Beach Buggy Assn., Berkeley Striper Club, Fishlanders, Atlantic Saltwater Flyrodders, Shore Surf Club and Assn. of Surf Angling Clubs (ASAC) and Shore Acres Fishing Club.

Fish & Crab Derby

Frank Richetti, JCAA past president and member of the Shore Acres Club, at Kettle Creek helped coordinate a Fish & Crab Derby, remove the comma  that is open to members and their guests.  The organization consists of over 200 families. There are three separate divisions in the event:

·        The juniors division for children 12 and under. All fish and crabs are eligible and every child gets a prize

·        There are two adult divisions: First is adult crab only - these are usually the parents of the kids who crab and fish from the bulkheads

·         The second adult division is for the more serious anglers who compete for blues, weakfish, fluke and striped bass.

The spirit of the Fish & Crab Derby is not one of competition but a day of friends, family and fun on the water.  The JCAA Youth Education Committee supported the event by supplying HOFNOD drug awareness literature and crabbing material for the children
