PRESIDENT’S REPORT

By Mark Taylor

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association Late Summer 2000 Newsletter)

I hope everyone is having a good summer despite the weather.  We all can do with a little less rain.  If you enjoy the resource you must get involved by writing letters, making telephone calls, sending faxes and e-mails to the proper people.  If you do not, you may lose your right to enjoy the resource in the future.  To get on JCAA’s hot issue e-mail list, send an e-mail to tfote@jcaa.org. On this e-mail have your name and fishing club you belong to.

It seems that we are under attack by environmental groups in our fluke fishery.  We are going to take this one on the chin.  We are at the mercy of the courts ruling because we do not have the lawyers to intercede for us or the money to hire them.  There is more on the fluke topic later in this newspaper by Tom Fote.

There has been some progress with Menhaden issues with a NJ Council vote on the proposal of Councilman Gary Dickerson.   His proposal “will not allow the harvest of Menhaden for the purpose of reduction within 3 miles”.  Frank Richetti gives more details later in this newspaper.

The Sportsperson of the Year Award Dinner date has been changed form November 5 to November 12, 2000. It’s time to start thinking of the Sportsperson of the Year Award.  We need people to submit a name and a reason for the nomination.  It will be brought up at our next meeting and voted on at the October meeting, so we can present it at the awards dinner in November. We had some names submitted already. If you are interested in helping out let me know.   Last year’s recipient of this award was Penn Fishing and Tackle Mfg. Co.   Penn is world renowned not only for its quality tackle, but also for its commitment to protecting marine resources.  Betty Henze and Ed Mesunas were there to accept the award.  This will prove to be a good time - hope to see you on November 12.

It is time to start thinking about whether you are interested in becoming an officer for Jersey Coast Anglers Association. We are looking for people to fill in positions for the next year. If you are interested please give me a call.

See you at the Governor’s Tournament.  Remember the next JCAA General Membership member meeting will be September 26 but there will be a board meeting August 29.
