(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association Late Summer 2000 Newsletter)
We are looking forward to another
successful event at Island Beach State Park on Sunday, October 1. Participating anglers will fish on Island Beach
State Park from 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM. This
annual event has become a fixture of the New Jersey Fall surf fishing season for an
increasing number of surf anglers and their families.
Last year over 1,200
anglers took part in the tournament. This is a fishing tournament that is enjoyed by the
veteran surf fisherman as well as the novice angler. Anglers of all ages and levels of
expertise take part and win in various categories in this tournament. The 1999
Governors Cup winner was Dorothy Harrison of Wayne, NJ for the largest fish caught, a red drum.
Special arrangements are made for handicapped anglers. Balloon tire equipped beach wheelchairs are
available for anglers with disabilities. Volunteers
will be on hand to assist any anglers with special needs who want to fish on tournament
day. For further information and/or to make
arrangements for a handicapped angler please contact Greg Kucharewski at 732-840-9197.
Various sporting organizations, state agencies and Tournament supporters will have
exhibits at the Pavilion throughout the tournament day.
If scheduling allows, Gov. Whitman is expected to appear at about 2 PM to present
awards and prizes to the winning anglers.
In the last year funds
from the tournament have been granted to the Friends of Island Beach State Park for
educational materials and field study equipment to use in support of the Barnegat Bay
Kayak Tour and Environmental Education Enhancement Program. This program is designed to
introduce adults and children to the natural wonders of Barnegat Bay and help them become
more aware of the importance of a healthy and clean environment.
Funds were also used to
purchase fishing equipment for the Becoming an Outdoor Woman surf and fly
fishing programs. The BOW surf fishing
program will be held at Island Beach State Park on Saturday, September 30 this year. This program has become very popular and is being
enlarged again this year.
Most recently, the
purchase of an automatic heart defibrillator unit for Island Beach State Park was fully
funded by the GSFT. Island Beach State Park
is now the first state park in New Jersey to be equipped with this vital piece of life
saving equipment.
Continued funding will
be granted to the JCAA Youth Education Committee for its various presentations in
conjunction with the Pathways to
Fishing and Hooked On Fishing-Not On Drugs programs.
The JCAA Youth Education
Committee promotes programs to introduce young people to fishing as a worthwhile hobby.
Idle time can be used for fishing-related activities rather than engaging in something
undesirable such as drug or alcohol use.
We need your help! If you do not plan to fish in the
tournament, we could use your help. We need owners of 4-wheel drive vehicles to volunteer
as beach judges measuring the fish caught by tournament contestants. Judges are vital to the smooth operation of this
tournament.
To volunteer as a judge
or for more information please contact Paul Smith at 732-899-2681 or Bob DeLeonard at
732-793-8080.
Tournament hats and
t-shirts will be on sale in the Pavilion on Tournament day! There will be a limited number of these special
items from Canyon Gear. The hats come with a
special embroidered tournament logo for 2000. The
t-shirts have a special new 9th Annual Governors Surf Fishing Tournament
design. Dont forget to stop at the
Pavilion before fishing to get your hat and shirt!
Pick up an entry form at your favorite tackle shop or
download a form here. If you enter before September 1, you
will be given a special early entry gift.
The NJ Division of Fish
& Wildlife will conduct a surf fishing seminar for women on Saturday, September 30. This is the third year that a Becoming an
Outdoors.Woman program will take place in conjunction with the Governors Surf
Fishing Tournament. BOW participants who fish
in the Tournament will have a chance to compete for a special award for the largest fish
among their group.
