YOUTH EDUCATION REPORT

By Greg Kucharewski

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association December 1998 Newsletter)

DRUG AWARENESS INFORMATION

The University of Washington, Washington, DC contacted the Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee about the Future Fisherman Foundation’s "Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs" program and how drug awareness fishing programs were implemented. Articles from several successful "Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs" events that the Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee hosted were mailed to the University of Washington along with the new Saltwater Resource Guide that Dr. Eleanor Bochenek authored.

The drug awareness information will be passed to communities that are going to introduce youngsters to fishing and promote the use of the "Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs" program.

SCOUT TROOPS INVADE IBSP

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are making use of the fifty surf rods and reels located at Island Beach State Park to learn about surfcasting. Youth surf fishing clinics are becoming more popular because of the availability of surf fishing equipment located at Island Beach State Park.

Where did the surf fishing equipment come from and who can use it? Well, since 1991 a surf fishing tournament called the Governor’s Annual Surf Fishing Tournament takes place the first Sunday of October. Funds generated from the Governor’s Annual Surf Fishing Tournament are earmarked for Marine Education, Shore Restoration Projects and Disabled Access. Event coordinators such as, NJ Division of F, G & Wildlife, Jersey Coast Anglers Association, Beach Buggy Association, NJ Federation of Sportsmen Clubs along with a host of other supporting organizations that donate time and services. Corporate sponsors have donated a considerable amount of fishing equipment to enhance the success of this worthwhile endeavor and the list of generous sponsors grows each year.

BECOMING AN OUTDOORS WOMAN AT IBSP

The J.C.A.A. Youth Education Committee was asked to support a "Becoming an Outdoors Woman" workshop about surf fishing at Island Beach State Park the day before the 7th Annual Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament. Twenty-seven women participated in the BOW workshop and sixteen veteran surf anglers helped with surf casting instruction. Nine of the veteran surf anglers were women that fish the suds regularly and were willing to share their angling skills with the BOW participants.

Twenty-two BOW participants returned the next day to fish the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament and test their newly acquired surf fishing skills. Rainy weather during the tournament did not discourage the novice BOW anglers. In fact most of the women continued to fish throughout the tournament and Carol Hostler won a nice rod & reel for her 22 inch Bluefish.

YOUTH FISHING ACTIVITY

The Jersey Coast Anglers Association's, Youth Education Committee, will be featuring special youth education seminars at upcoming sportsmen shows.
