Fishing Fun For Kids
Its going to be a long, cold winter and it can be the perfect opportunity to introduce children to learning about making hand-crafted fishing lures, rod repair, tying saltwater and freshwater flies, reel maintenance, and going to the outdoor hunting and fishing expositions. Outdoor sportsmen shows offer a variety of fun fishing and hunting attractions for children and their families. There are many learning displays set up at outdoor shows for children to keep busy and spark an interest in healthy outdoor activities. Families can also find bargains on hunting and fishing equipment for the novice hunter or fisher. If funds are available consider taking a fishing vacation, Disney World offers freshwater fishing and the rates are reasonable if you plan your trip before or after a holiday.
NEW VIDEO ADDED TO THE J.C.A.A. LIBRARY
Through the Jersey Coast Anglers Association's lending library, clubs and organizations can borrow video tapes and other supportive material to enhance their promotion of teaching others to fish. The latest addition to the Jersey Coast Anglers Association's lending library is a video produced by the Department of Environmental Protection that warns anglers of hazards in the Newark Bay Complex. Several warnings are mentioned throughout the video and it contains the following topics: how to properly clean fish, shell fish consumption, where to fish, warning signs that are posted in strategic areas of the Newark Bay Complex and a visual display of the area. The video is very informative and it is worth viewing if you fish the Newark Bay Complex or related areas. If your club or organization would like to borrow the video please phone: 732-899-8874 and leave a message with your name and phone number.
LOOKING FOR A SPONSOR
The Jersey Coast Anglers Associations Youth Education Committee is looking for a corporate sponsor to help fund our safe boating campaign for 1998. The corporate sponsor will help offset the printing cost of 50,000 bumper stickers that will be used to increase awareness about safe boating. The 1998 safe boating slogan is STAY AFLOAT DONT DRINK & BOAT. This will be part of our promotion for the Future Fisherman Foundations "Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs" 10 year anniversary.
The following letter was received from Roger R. Locandro, Ph.D., Professor of Agriculture & Natural Resources, Rutgers State University of New Jersey.
Dear Members of the Jersey Coast Anglers Association,
Congratulations on your selection of Dr. Eleanor Bochenek as the recipient of the 1997 Youth Education Award. I just wanted to add, that she is one of the finest fisheries experts and colleagues with whom I have had the pleasure to work. She is an excellent teacher, researcher and mentor to all. Her quiet, unassuming ways often go unnoticed by those who do not know her of have the benefit to work closely with her. She has, for several years, helped to teach the fisheries science and fisheries research courses here at the University. We were particular pleased to see the publication of the recent booklet on fishing which your organization nicely help sponsor. She was very successful and innovative in bringing out the best in several, good fisheries science students to have them share in the publication; this is very important to young, aspiring fisheries students. She also spends untold hours and days guiding and directing students research projects in a special effort to address the fisheries problems we have in New Jersey and to identify good solutions in addition to successfully integrating our teaching and outreach programs.
All the evaluations here at Rutgers University point out that she is an exceptional person and well liked by those with whom she works--I am sure the fish like her too!
