5TH ANNUAL GOVERNORS SURF FISHING TOURNAMENT
Sunday October 6
(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association - November 1996 Newspaper)
For the third straight year over 1,000 persons registered to fish in this popular annual event. Surf anglers of all ages started fishing at dawn in the quest for the honor of winning the Governor's Cup for 1996.
The continued success of this annual event is due to the cooperation and hard work of the state agencies and sportsmens groups involved. The co-sponsors are the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, the Division of Parks and Forestry, Jersey Coast Anglers, New Jersey Beach Buggy Association and the New Jersey Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs.
Over $8,700 was raised from the entry fees this year. This will be added to the funds that have been used to improve fishing access for handicapped anglers and for special educational projects to further public knowledge of the marine and shore environments in New Jersey.
The Tournament Committee wishes to express it's appreciation to the many volunteers from Jersey Coast Anglers member clubs who made all aspects of this tournament run so smoothly once again this year.
There were no large scale blitzes again this
year but enough fish were caught to make it interesting.
Winner of the 1996 Governor's Cup
