5TH ANNUAL GOVERNOR’S SURF FISHING TOURNAMENT

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association - October 1996 Newspaper)

Sunday October 6

We are looking forward to another successful event at Island Beach State Park on Sunday, October 6. This annual event has become a fixture of the fall surf fishing season for an increasing number of surf anglers and their families. In the 1995, over 1000 anglers were entered in the tournament and many more family members came to the beach with them for the day.

The original vision of a fishing tournament that could be enjoyed by the veteran surf fisherman as well as the novice angler has become a reality. Anglers of all ages and levels of expertise have taken part and won various categories in this tournament. There are even seminars to give the interested angler more information about how to fish in the surf. Various sporting organizations and state agencies also supply information about the shore and marine environment.

If scheduling allows, Governor Whitman will attend the awards ceremony after the end of the tournament, to present some prizes and the meet the participants. How about taking part in the tournament either as an angler or as a volunteer to help make the event a success. There are plenty of jobs to do any time between 4:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Remember all the profits go to projects that will increase the public awareness of the marine environment, and to improve access and fishing opportunities in the shore area. If you want to enter the tournament, you can do so at the park that morning. Fishing starts at 6 AM.

If you would like to assist for the good of the cause, contact Bill Degnan at 908-506-6565 or Paul Smith at 908-899-2681.

See you on the 6th !!
