Forked River Tuna Club

Sponsor Profile

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association April 1994 Newsletter)

One of oldest clubs on the JCAA roster is the Forked River Tuna Club. First formed in 1930 as the Forked River Yacht & Gun Club, it was later incorporated under its present name in 1956. Their first president was State Senator W. Steelman Mathis. One of their members, Richard Barkalaw, won the Atlantic Tuna Tournament in 1938 with one of the largest sport caught tunas on record, weighing in at 308 pounds. It was caught at Ambrose Light in the Mudhole.

Under current commodore, Larry Linthwaite, the Forked River Tuna Club is still going strong. They are lucky enough to own their club house at 10 Bay Avenue in Forked River, which serves as a base of operations for many of their annual tournaments, picnics, seminars and other events. Their tournament director and JCAA rep, Elmer Peek, gave us the line up of tournaments for 1994. They include a June 11th Shark and Bluefish Contest, the August 13th Tuna/Bluefish/Fluke Tournament and the November 5th Striped Bass Tournament. They are open to non- members and are usually preceded by an evening of seminars on the night of the captain's meetings.

Also open to the public, they will sponsor their annual "How to Hook 'Em" Sportfishing Seminars. They include a Wreck fishing seminar by Capt. John Raguso on April 21st and a Canyon chunking and trolling seminar on April 28th, featuring Jeff Merrill. All classes start at 6:00 PM, the kitchen and bar are open and door prizes drawings are included in the price of the tickets. The cost is only $10 per night. Call 609-693-1977 days or 609-971-1611 evenings for seminar and tournament information. he Forked River Tuna Club has supported JCAA with $500 sponsorships since 1993 and we heartily thank them for their help. We would also like to see them become more involved in JCAA affairs, like the upcoming Symposium or other projects. How about it guys? JCAA is working for you and the more we work together, the more we can accomplish for all marine sport fishermen.
