President's Reportby Bruce Smith (from Jersey Coast Anglers Association November 2006 Newsletter) SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD CEREMONY AND DINNER Associate clubs in good standing are encouraged to submit, in writing, their nomination for Sportsperson of the Year Award. The letter of nomination should be approximately 150 words detailing the nominee’s activities that have contributed to the improvement of recreational fishing. Letters may be mailed to the JCAA office or hand carried to the October 31st general meeting to be submitted from the floor. After nominations are closed, club members in attendance will vote for the JCAA Sportsperson of the Year. The biographies of nominees already submitted so far.
Newark Bait and Flycasting Club is nominating Dr. Eleanor Bochenek for JCAA’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2006.
Dr. Bochenek came to work for New Jersey Seagrant to deal with recreational fishing and marine trades. She also worked on environmental issues and helped the Barnegat Bay Estuary Program do a video and lesson plan called Guardians of the Bay. She proved a valuable asset to both recreational fishing and the boating industry. After leaving Seagrant for a position at Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory, she began doing research on a variety of fisheries issues. Eleanor has volunteered hundreds of hours to the Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs Program. She has put together a youth fishing book. She has never been a “9 – 5” person. She is always available for JCAA events and is a valuable resource for us whenever science is involved. In her role as a research scientist for Haskin Laboratory she has worked on projects that help stock assessment. The JCAA Fluke Tournament Survey only happens because of Eleanor’s hard work. JCAA occasionally pay her for some of her time but they get so many more volunteer hours from Eleanor than the bill would suggest. She makes herself available well beyond the time JCAA could ever afford to pay her for. Eleanor is an avid hunter and angler so she understands these issues from many different points of view. Newark Bait and Flycasting Club is honored to nominate Eleanor Bochenek for JCAA’s Sportsperson of the Year.
