2005 YOUTH EDUCATION AWARD
The JCAA Youth Education Committee will present the 2005 Youth Education Award to the Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen at the JCAA Annual Dinner Dance for their promotion of the “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” program. Great job, guys. Keep up the good work.
BECOMING AN OUTDOORS WOMAN/PERSON
The BOW/P surf fishing program on Saturday, October 1, 2005 turned out to be the best ever. Of the 41 attendees, 12 were males that learned how to surf fish with their companions. I participated as a BOW Instructor since the inception of the BOW Surf Fishing Clinic at Island Beach State Park and I must say this group was very enthusiastic about learning how to reel in the big fish and read the beach. The BOW group also helped each other on the beach and shared their newly found skills with someone that had difficulty tying a knot or surf casting. Linda Buono, BOW Coordinator, did a great job of making sure everyone enjoyed their surf fishing experience and providing all the refreshments for breakfast and lunch. Several BOW veteran volunteers conducted the following surf fishing stations: Reading the Beach, Baits and Lures, Knots and Terminal Tackle, Surf Rods and Reels, Surfcasting, Fish Biology, Fish Cleaning and Cooking.
Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament
Over 200 children received “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” goodie bags for participating at the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife and Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s drug awareness activity booth at the Governor’s 14th Annual Surf Fishing Tournament. Wayne Tonneson, NJ Conservation Officer and NJ State Coordinator for the Future Fisherman Foundation’s “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” program demonstrated saltwater fly tying and taught children the art of tying a Clouser Minnow cap or lapel pin. Several children had a chance to experience tying a Clouser Minnow and Wayne Tonnenson patiently guided youngsters through the proper sequence to tie the perfect decorative fly. I’m sure youngsters will display their saltwater fly creation proudly on their jacket or cap. Great job Wayne and son!
Special thanks go out to Billy Williams for assisting at the Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s “Pitch Casting for Bass” booth. Billy is President of the Shore Surf Club and has assisted at the GSFT since 1992. We also thank the many volunteers, judges and sponsors of the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament that make the tournament a great success.
