Governor's Surf Fishing Tournamentby Paul Smith, Tournament Committee (from Jersey Coast Anglers Association November 2005 Newsletter) Air temperature in the eighties and surf water still in the low seventies provided a summer-like day for the 1058 anglers entered in this year’s event. The perfect weather was better than the fishing, with only 50 eligible fish caught by the participating anglers. There were huge schools of mullet and several bluefish blitzes on sections of the same beach the previous day. Unfortunately, this type of action did not continue on tournament day This event was sponsored by the Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish & Wildlife and Division of Parks and Forestry. Co-sponsoring were the New Jersey Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, Jersey Coast Anglers Association, and the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association. Overall length determined the winners for each of the specie’s categories. There were children, teen, and adult angler categories, including sub-categories for male and female anglers. Surf rod and reel outfits were awarded as prizes to the winners in each category. The winner of the prestigious Governor's Cup, for the largest fish caught, was Carl Kogel of Jackson, NJ with a 34-1/2 inch long bluefish . Mr. Kogel received a plaque along with valuable prizes. Additionally, his name will be engraved on the Governor's Cup, which is permanently displayed in the lobby of the Island Beach State Park administration building. Along with the tournament prizes offered, the registration forms of pre-registrants and same-day entrants were placed into special drawings for additional prizes. A final word of thanks goes to state employees and the many volunteers that made this year’s tournament so enjoyable. This annual effort runs smoothly because of the dedication of these people. The judges deserve a great amount of praise for not only donating their time, but also the use of their 4-wheel drive vehicles. Judging can be a boring or demanding job at different times, but it is a crucial element in the continued success of this tournament. 2005 Governor Cup Winners Bluefish Category (39 Caught) Adult (Male) First Place Carl Kogel Jackson 34-1/2 Inches and 2005 Governor Cup Winner Second Place Kevin Martin Bayonne 32 Inches Third Place Gary GomacicLakewood 31-5/8 Inches Adult (Female) First Place Beverly DwyerWhiting 28-1/4 Inches Second Place Daerelle ApplebyDayton 19-3/8 Inches Child (Female) First Place Maria Stevens Burlington Twp. 18-1/2 Inches First Place Vincent Altamari Tabernacle 19-3/8 InchesTeen (Female) First Place Jaime JanachToms River 29-3/4 Inches Teen (Male) First Place Larry Chan`Warren 30-1/2 Inches Second Place Shane ColvellHightstown Inches Blackfish 5 caught Adult Male First Place Claus Faller7/8 inches Second Place Zoltan EgyedTrenton 18-¾ inches Third Place Alexander VeghTrenton14 inches Weakfish 1 caught Adult Male First Place Michael Washington Marlton 14 inchesFluke 3 caught Adult Male First Place Howard BeyroutNorth Brunswick 17-½ inchesSecond Place Chris StaggLincoln Park 16-5/8 inches Teen Male First Place Kyle KuchBayville 17 inches King Fish 2 caught Teen Male First Place Geo Leager IVPhiladelphia 10- ½ inches Child Male First Place George SownerOcean City 10-1/8 inches
