SCHOOLS HELPING SCHOOLS

The JCAA Youth Education Committee will provide a short statement mentioning how the Schools Helping Schools improves the academic and personal growth of America's youth and how schools participate in the “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs” program.  It will be submitted to the NJ Association of Partners in Education and NJ Association of School Administrators and we will explain how schools work together and promote the “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs” program.  In the past the JCAA has supported Schools Helping Schools program.  The best part about the Schools Helping Schools program is that it is supported by merchants and Bait & Tackle shops that support the JCAA.  The program will be featured at the annual Oceanarium in May in which other schools and members of the community attend.  Rosemary Beales, Educator and recipient of the 2003 JCAA Youth Education Award, is a founder of the program.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO

Each year, the Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee, and the Merickel-Farley Trout Club lend support to the University of Toledo's National Youth Sports Program.  We are very proud to be part of a program that was recognized for a second year as being the “best in the nation.”  The National Youth Sports Corporation board of directors, stated UT's NYSP program was the first ever to win in consecutive years.  During summer vacation, over 200 colleges and universities from the United States and Puerto Rico compete for this coveted award and UT's program was again honored for its outstanding quality, exceptional instruction and leadership.  “It is truly an honor to receive the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence two years in a row.  “The commitment from the NYSP staff, advisory board, faculty, administrators, students, community partners and supporters from local and state government has been solid and unwavering,” said UT administrator of NYSP, Dr. Ruthie Kucharewski, who is also an associate professor of public health and rehabilitative services.  “To win the Award of Excellence again is a true testament to everyone's dedication to our program and to the youth in Toledo.  UT's NYSP is very fortunate to have a community that is willing to support the recreational and educational needs of our children during the summer.”  The federally funded program began at UT in 1968. Last summer, more than 500 economically disadvantaged youths, ages 10 to 16, came to UT's campus for five weeks of daily recreational instruction and educational programs that included math and science tutoring, and alcohol, tobacco and drug awareness seminars.

NATIONAL 4-H SPORTFISHING PROGRAM

4-H is the youth education branch of the Cooperative Extension Service, a program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Each State and county has access to an Extension Office for both youth and adult.  Across the country, 4-H clubs bring a sense of community and a variety of lifestyle development and leisure opportunities to nearly 7 million youngsters, including a chance to learn healthy pastimes such as sport fishing.  The National 4-H Sportfishing Program is a partnership among 4-H educators, the Future Fisherman Foundation, and outdoor educators from state and federal agencies.  One of many youth development programs offered by 4-H clubs, this partnership is designed to help youngsters develop life skills while providing a comprehensive education curriculum about fishing and conservation and plenty of chances to apply what is learned. For more information, please visit the Future Fisherman Foundation Website: www.futurefisherman.org  or phone 703-519-9691.
