On October 28, 2004 I attended the ASMFC Menhaden Advisory Panel Meeting. The main purpose of the meeting was to review the recommendations of the workshop held October 12-14 that dealt with the perceived problem of striped bass and menhaden in Chesapeake Bay. Below is a condensed summary of the meeting. The great disparity of viewpoints in the commercial and non-commercial interests was never more evident than at this meeting. There seemed to be a genuine hostility among the participants when consensus was sought on some of the key issues. The points of agreement consisted of defining research priorities, development of fishery-independent data for recruitment and Spawning Stock Biomass, and the need to define the ecologically-based reference points.
