The Shark River Surf Anglers will receive the Jersey Coast Anglers Association 2004 Youth Education Award for their continued promotion of family fishing and providing “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” programs at fishing events. The award will be presented at the JCAA Annual Sportsperson of the Year Award Dinner.
JCAA EDUCATION SUPPORT
Dr. Eleanor Bochenek (Rutgers University) assisted Roger Locandro (Professor emeritus, Rutgers University) in conducting a Becoming an Outdoor Woman Program on preparing and cooking seafood. at the Wetlands Institute of September 11. Approximately 25 women participated in the program and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
GOVERNOR’S SURF FISHING TOURNAMENT
Over 150 children received “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” goodie bags for participating at the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife and Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s drug awareness activity booth at the Governor’s 13th Annual Surf Fishing Tournament. Wayne Tonnesen, NJ Conservation Officer and NJ State Coordinator for the Future Fisherman Foundation’s “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” program demonstrated saltwater fly tying and taught children how to make a saltwater fly hatpin. Several children had a chance to experience tying a Clouser Minnow. Wayne and his two sons also assisted teaching novice anglers on the beach. What a team, great job Wayne! Special thanks go out to members of the Shore Surf Club for assisting at the Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s knot tying booth and the Governor’s Cup Committee Tee Shirt booth. We also thank the many volunteers, judges and sponsors of the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament that make the tournament a great success. Ed Norvillas, long time volunteer of the BOW and Governor’s Surf Fishing recently passed away. Ed will be missed, he shared his knowledge of fishing with many novice anglers.
WOMEN LEARN SURF FISHING
The “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” surf fishing clinic at Island Beach State Park, New Jersey was another successful event. Thirty-four women learned the basics of surf fishing hosted by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife with the support of many volunteers from environmental organizations and fishing clubs. The following stations were presented: New Jersey saltwater rules and regulations, fish biology, reading the beach, presentation of baits, using artificial lures, rods and reels, knot tying, fly/surf casting, fish fillet/cleaning and equipment maintenance. Several participants stated the surf-fishing clinic was fun and would continue to go surf fishing. Approximately eight to ten people registered to fish the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament and some caught fish that were measured for the prize completion. Instructors for the BOW program: Linda Buono, Paul and Eileen Smith, Bruce and Pat Hoagland, Dorothy Obropta, Dr. Eleanor Bochenek, Darren Dorris, and Ron Ruerep.
