Youth Education Report
by Greg Kucharewski
(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association January 2004 Newsletter)
PASSPORT TO FISHING AND BOATING
The JCAA Youth Education Committee will meet with representatives from NJ Sea Grant, NJMTA, and DFW to discuss how we can combine our efforts to promote the new Passport to Fishing and Boating program at sportsmen shows and boating events. We will use the Water Works Wonders event planning tools to advertise Passport to Fishing and Boating events and set up a booth to inform fishing clubs and local schools about how to use PFB/WWW materials. We are looking for volunteers to assist with Passport to Fishing and Boating stations and presenters for the program. If your club members are interested in helping, please ask them to e-mail us at gkucharewski@aol.com and enter PFB in the subject line of the e-mail.
MORE FISHING STUFF
The Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee received another donation of fishing and boating equipment from Mrs. Pat Schweiker. The donation of equipment is in memory of her husband, Jack Schweiker. Jack was an avid sportsperson that spent many hours with children teaching them a variety of outdoor sports that included fishing. Jack also supported the Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s mission statement and enjoyed receiving the JCAA electronic newspaper monthly. He enjoyed reading the JCAA newspaper and was always interested in how JCAA membership organizations promoted healthy outdoor activities for our youngsters. The donation of fishing and boating equipment will be used to promote upcoming youth fishing and drug awareness programs.
OUTDOOR SPORTSMEN SHOW
The Jersey Coast Anglers Association's Youth Education Committee will feature activities from the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation’s Passport to Fishing and Boating program. A special fishing and boating seminar for families will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 11, 2004, at Raritan Center, Edison, NJ. Participating vendors at the hunting and fishing exposition will offer special promotions at their booths for children attending the Jersey Coast Anglers Association's Youth Fishing Seminars. Come out and enjoy the fun. There will be prizes for children and coupons for the trout pond.
OCEAN FIRST FOUNDATION GRANT
The JCAA Youth Education Committee is submitting an application for a grant to Ocean First Foundation for printed materials that would support JCAA Youth Education drug awareness, safe boating/fishing, aquatic education, and teaching families about healthy outdoor activities throughout New Jersey. The printed materials will be distributed at sportsmen/boating events, the 2004 JCAA Fluke Tournament, the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament, NJ State Partnered Programs, National Fishing and Boating Week, Army Community Service Facilities, JCAA Youth Education school/library seminars. We are completing the grant application and will pass it to the JCAA board in January 2004 for approval.
WATER WORKS WONDERS
We received our Water Works Wonders event planning kit for 2004 that the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) and National Fishing and Boating Week Steering Committee (MFBWSC) provides to help plan and promote a successful event.
