SINGLE MOTHERS AND THEIR CHILDREN

A grant proposal was submitted to the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation to reach under-represented audiences: “Single Mothers and Their Children.”  The grant proposal was prepared by Dr. Eleanor Bochenek, Rutgers University, Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory and submitted by the Jersey Coast Anglers Association, Youth Education Committee.  The following is a brief synopsis of the grant proposal Dr. Eleanor Bochenek composed: A Pilot Saltwater Fishing and Boating Program Targeting Single Mothers and Their Children. Caucasian males have primarily enjoyed fishing and boating and their participation in these activities has been declining.  The fishing and boating community has identified Hispanics, African Americans, women, and disabled people as underrepresented audiences in fishing and boating.  In order to increase participation in boating and fishing as a leisure activity, programs must be developed to educate and involve these minorities in both boating and fishing.  One such target audience is single mothers and their children.  Many households are now comprised of single mothers with their children.  Fishing and boating programs must be developed that specifically target single mothers and their children in order to increase participation in boating and fishing, because this group comprises such a large portion of the population. Programs have been developed that separately target women (ex. Becoming an Outdoor Woman) and children (ex. Hooked on Fishing and Not on Drugs).

This project proposes to develop an educational saltwater fishing and boating program that jointly targets single mothers (between the ages of 30 and 45) and their children (between the ages of 9 and 13).

Program Objectives

1.Develop a saltwater fishing and boating program for single mothers and their children.

2.Increase participation in fishing and boating by single mothers and their children.

3.To assess the impact of the program on the sale of fishing tackle and bait.

PASSPORT TO FISHING AND BOATING

Last month we traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to assist in a pilot test for the RBFF Passport To Fishing and Boating event kit.  Mr. Ti Piper, Contractor Fishing Clinics & Aquatic Education, New Mexico Dept Game & Fish hosted two Passport to Fishing and Boating events for Passport To Fishing and Boating working group members.  Each station was evaluated for the following: station timing, script presentation, prop consistency, station setup, and client participation.  Group members conducted presenter surveys for the Passport To Fishing and Boating event kit and evaluated data to improve presenter timing and reinforce core messages. The working group committee spent three days updating the following Passport To Fishing and Boating event kit changes: presenter script/format, poster logos and images, station extensions, casting techniques, boaters safety equipment, core messages, equipment needs, and local information suggestions/setup.  The Passport To Fishing and Boating event kits is to be completed by National Fishing and Boating Week, June 1-9, 2003.
