JCAA

President's Report

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association November 2002 Newsletter)

With the Sportsperson-of-the-Year Dinner/Dance rapidly approaching, there remain a few areas of concern. First and most important, there are a number of dinner tickets that have yet to be sold. I cannot stress how important it is, not only for the JCAA but for the recreational fisherman as well, to show Governor McGreevey, who is slated to be the evening’s keynote speaker, just how strong and united we are. With all the battles we have been involved in lately, we need all the support from our elected officials that we can get, and what better way to show the governor how committed we are than by selling the place out. We should all make every effort to sell as many of those tickets that are left as possible. Secondly, we are in need of gifts, either for the silent or Chinese auctions, door prizes or for the basket of cheer. I’m sure that if we all put forth a little bit of effort and solicit the businesses we normally frequent for a donation of any kind, we can truly make the evening a huge success. And please remember not to limit the prizes for the men only, as we usually have a good deal of women in attendance, and they are entitled to some of the fun also. By the way, Paul Turi, the dinner chairman, would like to have all the gifts in before the start of the October general membership meeting. We will have people there early that night to accommodate anyone bringing in gifts, and please be sure to let us know who donated the gift so we can include their name in the program for the dinner/dance.

At the September general membership meeting we had one nomination for the Sportsperson-of-the-Year award, and I want to be sure everyone is aware that the nominations will not be closed until just before we take the vote at this month’s general membership meeting. I want to stress that there will be time before the vote is taken for nominations, and please be prepared to give a brief explanation of what that person has done for the recreational fisherman and why they should be considered.

As I stated in the last newsletter, now is the time that we must start putting together the slate of officers who will guide the JCAA in the year 2003. Anyone interested in running for an office, please be sure to contact Chairman Don Marantz and let him know what position you would be interested in filling. The nominations will take place during the November general membership meeting, and the vote will be held at the December meeting. We are definitely in need of some new blood to share in the work and we must stop relying on the same core of individuals to carry the load.

We have not received many requests to date by club reps for the scheduling of the Clean Water PowerPoint presentation for their clubs. Frankly, this has me a bit perplexed. Clean water is so important to all of us, as it not only affects our fishing, but our very existence as well, and why wouldn’t member clubs want to know what is being done to protect this most important natural resource, and what they can do to help with the fight to keep our waters clean. A great deal of time and effort has been put into this presentation, so please call or let us know when we can schedule your club for this presentation, and I’m sure you will not regret it.
