Sport Fishing/Yamaha "Learn From The Experts" Seminar Comes to Toms River

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association September 2002 Newsletter)

Toms River NJ- Anglers of all skill levels will want to attend the Toms River “Learn from the Experts” Saltwater Fishing Seminar, co-sponsored by Sport Fishing magazine and Yamaha Outboards. This very popular event takes place Thursday night, September 26, 2002, at the Holiday Inn-Toms River, 290 Hwy. 37 E, Toms River, NJ 08753;  phone 732-244-4400.

Four local experts will offer a solid evening of intense instruction in a multi-media, team-teach format on how to catch more fish: Capt. Dave Riback, Capt. Shell E. Caris, Capt. Gene Quigley and Capt. Bob Carton.

Capt. Gene Quigley, Toms River, N.J., is a U.S.C.G.- licensed captain. A native of the Jersey Shore, Gene has been fishing the beaches and the inshore and offshore waters of New Jersey for over 25 years. His guide service, Shore Catch, covers the waters from Sandy Hook to Island Beach State Park, and he works the beach from his custom rigged 4x4s. Inshore, he uses a custom-rigged 21-foot Parker. He is an accomplished fly tier and outdoor writer; his articles on fly-and light-tackle fishing have been published in Fly Fishing in Salt Waters and The Fisherman magazines. Last fall Gene was a featured guest on Gary Edwards “Vacations on the Fly” which airs this season on the PBS television network.. He returns to the “Learn from the Experts” seminar series to speak on “Saltwater Fly Fishing off the New Jersey Shore.”

A native New Jersey angler, Capt. Dave Riback, Point Pleasant, N.J., began his professional career as a deckhand on the Queen Mary charter boat, working his way through college. He obtained his captain’s license in ‘94 and acquired his two boats, the Purple Jet, a 39-foot Key West, and the Purple Jet 2, a 44-foot custom Henriques, shortly thereafter. Both boats operate out of Ken’s Landing, where his season runs all year as he pursues striped bass, false albies and bluefin. Capt. Dave will speak on “Striper, Blues and Tuna Fishing.”

Capt. Bob Carton, Summit, N.J., operates The Shark, a modern, fast, clean 52-foot Hatteras Convertible off the New Jersey coast where some of the most prized game fish in the world live.  The crew of The Shark has finished in the money in many major fishing tournaments, winning in the blue marlin, white marlin and tuna categories.  Sport fishing on the The Shark can be one of the most exciting experiences of a lifetime. Carton fishes three different habitats: inshore (usually within 20 miles), offshore (between 20 and 50 miles) and to the Canyon (between 60 and 100 miles).  Capt. Bob will speak on “Canyon Fishing Techniques.”

Capt. Shell E. Caris, Toms River, is an accomplished spin, conventional and fly tackle angler. He has over forty years of surf fishing experience and is well known on the Jersey shore fishing community as a resident expert, fly tier and outdoor writer. Shell returns to the Sport Fishing/ Yamaha seminar series in 2002 and will speak on “Light Tackle Techniques on the New Jersey shore.”
