JCAA 8th Annual Fluke Tournament 1003 Boats Paricipate

Jack Farrell Wins Cobia boat , Yamaha engine& LoadRite Trailer

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association July 2002 Newsletter)

Anglers living within the tri-state area of New Jersey and beyond showed their support for the Jersey Coast Anglers Association by entering the largest one-day fluke fishing tournament along the Jersey Shore.  The JCAA is an organization that represents the environmental needs of marine sport fishermen, promotes economic equality for all marine anglers using our aquatic resources and is deeply involved in introducing our young people to fishing as an alternative to gangs, drugs and violence.

On June 8, 2002, one thousand and three boats were registered for the JCAA 8th Annual Fluke Fishing Tournament. As six anglers per boat were allowed up to six thousand anglers may have used their best fishing skills to compete for cash prizes and a variety of fishing equipment that would satisfy any anglers’ dream.  The heaviest fluke of all -- and a record -- was a 9.9-pound giant caught by Don Hillegass of Beachwood. He weighed his fish at Southwinds Marina, Forked River. Hillegass' fish was caught in the bay as his dad was reluctant to try the ridge in his new boat. The other 11 top fish weighed at each of the 12 weigh stations throughout the state won $1,000 prizes.

Hillegass's trophy measured 29 ½-inches long, 2 1/2 inches longer than the second-place, 9.4-pounder that Bryan Pieros of Whitehouse Station caught and weighed at Southwinds.  The heaviest fluke caught last year in the Jersey Coast Anglers Association-sponsored tournament was a 9.05-pounder taken by John Fawcett of Barnegat. It was also weighed at Southwinds.

The grand awards ceremony was hosted by Trump Marina Hotel Casino in Atlantic City on Friday June 14 with over 2,000 people in attendance.  Our accommodations for the evening were spectacular. Gary Caputi did an outstanding job as the Master of Ceremonies.  Gary set a new record, giving out 83 door prizes, a boat, motor and trailer and announcing 96 port prizewinners in about an hour. Tournament participant’s, some of whom came by boat to the marina, enjoyed the luxurious setting of Trump Marina Hotel Casino Grand Caymen Ball Room to witness the drawing of the Grand Prize, a 194 Cobia Boat equipped with a 115 horsepower Yamaha Outboard resting on a LoadRite Trailer; and over 83 fabulous door prizes worth over ten thousand dollars from our sponsors.

The Cobia Boat, Yamaha Outboard Engine and LoadRite trailer winner for the 8th Annual Jersey Coast Fluke Tournament is Jack Farrell.  His boat number was 271 and the name of the boat is Last Cast.  Jack held with tradition, he had not weighed in a fish during the tournament.  Jack was represented at the Awards Ceremony by his crew members, Steve Lutz, Ted Lutz and Tim Scully.  We have yet to have a port prizewinner win the grand prize. It just shows you that all you have to do is register in the JCAA Fluke Fishing Tournament to be a winner.  Congratulations to Jack, his crew and his family.  We hope they enjoy the Cobia Boat, Yamaha Outboard and LoadRite Trailer.

This tournament could not have been possible without the time and effort put in by all the volunteers at JCAA.  Special thanks must go to Rich Pasko and Phil Celmer.  Rich’s volunteer work made this the biggest tournament ever in New Jersey.  Phil Celmer, our office manger, was in the office working hard until all hours of the night ensuring everything went smoothly.  The JCAA board members would like to thank the families of all those volunteers for being understanding while they worked on this tournament.  We would also like to thank the all the people who pitched in at Trumps Marina Hotel Casino registering people and selling t-shirts.  Our sincere thanks go to all of our sponsors. We appreciate their continuing support.  The major sponsors were; Trump Marina Hotel Casino, Cobia Boats & Lighting Jack’s Marina, Yamaha Outboards, LoadRite Trailers, Boater’s World Marine Centers, Raymarine Company, Canyon Gear International Outfitters, Penn Reels, Reel Saver, The Fisherman Magazine, The New Jersey Angler, and Star brite. Other donors who contributed Door Prizes include:
