Youth Education Report
by Greg Kucharewski
(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association July 2002 Newsletter)
THANK YOU NOTE
This is what makes volunteering fun. We received the greatest thank you note from Nancy Kodan, a retired educator from Lanes Mill School, Brick, NJ who projects the spirit of volunteerism within the Brick school district. In her letter she personally thanks the JCAA Youth Education Committee for supporting the annual Lanes Mill School Reading Rally. Nancy also stated, students, teachers and administrators of Lanes Mill School appreciated our youth fishing activity and casting presentation. By the way, Nancy asked us to return for the 2003 Lanes Mill School Reading Rally and it is on our calendar.
OHIO CAMPERS EXCITED ABOUT FISHING
The Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Director is invited to visit the University of Toledo from July 03-12, 2002 and support their National Youth Sports Program NYSP, fishing week. NYSP is a program that helps children build the skills and the confidence they need to tackle future challenges. The University of Toledo’s National Youth Sports Program provides summer recreation enrichment programming for approximately 450 children. UT’s NYSP is a nationally recognized program for economically disadvantaged youths ages 10 to 16. The program offers youngsters the opportunity to participate in daily sports instruction and educational programs throughout a five-week period.
The Ohio Division of Fish and Game will supply small tackle containers and loaner fishing equipment to support NYSP fishing days at Olander Park. Aquatic education field trips will reinforce inter community fishing and partner youngsters within local neighborhoods to become fishing buddies. The Merkel-Farley Trout Club donated funds to support the event and their membership will assist at aquatic learning stations and fishing instruction at Olander Park. Our JCAA Youth Education Committee will provide guidance about the Future Fisherman Foundation’s “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs,” “Water Works Wonders” and demonstrate a variety of angling techniques. Marine aquatic education will be discussed for children visiting coastal states during the remainder of their summer vacation.
NEWARK BAIT AND FLYCASTING CLUB
On May 7, 2002, members of the Newark Bait and Flycasting Club hosted a youth fishing clinic at their monthly meeting. Twenty-two children attended a fishing clinic at the Knights Of Columbus Hall, located in Union, NJ. Children and their families learned about saltwater and freshwater fishing techniques from veteran anglers that belong to the Newark Bait and Flycasting Club. The eventful evening offered plenty of refreshments, tackle goodie bags and prizes for all the participants. The Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee supported this worthwhile event by conducting a crabbing seminar and supplied “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” packets for all the youngsters. If your fishing club or organization would like information about JCAA youth education seminars, please e-mail, Gkucharews@aol.com and if time allows we will help support your event.
JCAA YOUTH EDUCATION MATERIALS
National Fishing And Boating Week and “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” materials are available to JCAA member clubs and organizations. Please let the JCAA Youth Education Committee know if your organization needs drug awareness and fishing promotional items for your next fishing event. If your fishing club is hosting a large event this summer or fall, please phone 732-785-9278 and we will return your call as soon as possible.
