President's Report

by Rich Esposito

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association July 2002 Newsletter)

This year’s JCAA Fluke Tournament, which was held on June 8th, drew a record number of entries, 1,002 to be exact. Although the weather and the ocean did not fully cooperate, a large number of big fluke were weighed in, the largest being a 9.90lb. doormat taken in the Barnegat Bay, caught coincidently by a relative of a good friend of mine.  Our congratulations go out to all the winners of all of the port prizes, and we truly appreciate your  participation in our annual tournament, whose proceeds go towards furthering the efforts of the JCAA on behalf of the recreational fisherman.

With an event of this magnitude, a great deal of outside support is needed to be successful, which leads me to express our gratitude to all of the event sponsors and supporters.

We must also thank the efforts of those members of the JCAA and their families for all the time and effort they put forth to stage this great event, starting with Phil Celmer and Rich Pasko, who together have taken this event to the highest level of achievement to date for which they should be commended. The others who also deserve a great deal of credit are Frank Richetti, Tom Fote, Mark Taylor, John Koegler, Paul Turi, Ed Cherry, Paul Smith, Greg Kucharewski, Al and Don Marantz, Dave Smith and Dan Miller. As you can clearly see, the list is vast, and I hope I don’t offend anyone if I have failed to mention them. I would also like to say thanks to Gary Caputi for the great job he continues to do as the official emcee of the tournament.

Please be advised that this month’s general meeting, which will be held on Tuesday night, June 25th, will be the last until our September meeting as we go on summer hiatus. There will continue to be Board of Director meetings on the second Tuesday night of both July and August at the JCAA office. We will also be publishing a mid-summer newsletter around the first week of August. I inform you of these facts as there could possibly be the need for a vote by all clubs on the position the JCAA will take on upcoming legislation concerning striped bass and weakfish. Once we get all the options available, we will either print them in the mid-summer newsletter or send out a special letter to all club representatives asking for their club’s vote on these issues. Your timely response will be needed to insure that your club’s position will be heard.

It is also the time that we should be thinking of possible candidates for this year’s sportsperson of the year award. We will be taking nominations at the September general meeting, and the actual vote will be held during the October meeting, with the dinner dance scheduled for Sunday night, November 10th. Please be prepared to provide a paragraph or two on why the person you are nominating deserves to be considered.
