President's Report

by Rich Esposito

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association April 2002 Newsletter)

While waiting on line recently at the Berkeley Striper Club annual flea market, I was approached by a representative of a member club and asked why our monthly general membership meeting usually starts at 8:00 pm and not at 7:30 pm as advertised. I explained that the reason the meetings start closer to 8:00 than 7:30 is that our by-laws state that we must have a quorum of club representatives in attendance before we can start conducting any official business, and due to the fact that some of our members travel a great distance to get to the meeting is the reason why they generally start when they do. I would like to say that if we all make every effort to arrive by 7:30, then I pledge to get the meeting started as soon as we have a quorum. While we are on this subject, I would also like to say that if all club representatives read the newsletter prior to coming to the meeting, and let me assure you that a huge amount of effort goes into having the newsletter in the mail at least a week before the general meeting, then most of the questions raised at the meeting would already be answered and we could keep the proceedings moving at a swift pace and probably end the meeting at a more reasonable time.

Please be advised that at this month’s general membership meeting we will be having a dry run of the PowerPoint presentation on clean water that will start at 7:30 regardless whether or not we have a quorum in attendance. I strongly urge that all club reps make every effort to be there by 7:30, and please have the dates when we can schedule your club for this demonstration.

Just a reminder that this is the last month to get out and sell tickets for our high roller raffle which will be held prior to our monthly meeting on April 30th. I’m sure you will all agree that with the array of prizes that are being offered, and the fact that this is one of the larger fundraisers of the year, every effort should be made to sell as many tickets as possible. There will be ticket books available at this month’s meeting, so please don’t be shy, and show us how much you appreciate the work that all of us volunteers put forth for the good of the recreational fishermen in the State of New Jersey.

As I’m sure you are all probably aware of, the fluke regulations for this year have been set. The season will run from May 18th thru September 24th with a bag limit of eight fish per angler and a size limit of 161/2”.  Needless to say, once again, the recreational fisherman, tackle shops and party boats have taken one on the chin. It is my sincere hope that one day we will be able to obtain accurate data on the true size of the summer flounder population and return to a longer season as we had in years past.

As our annual fluke tournament draws near, which is the largest fundraiser of the year, we are enlisting the help of all those willing to aid in this enormous endeavor. We will be in need of people to work the office at night, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, from May 29th right up until June 7th, taking entries over the phone and answering any questions that some entrants might have. We will also need people to work at Trump’s Marina Casino on June 14th from 1:00 pm until the conclusion of that evening’s festivities. Please contact either the tournament chairman, Rich Pasko, or you can leave a message at the office denoting in what capacity you would be willing to help. Once again, I wish to say that your assistance is greatly needed to insure the success of this venture.
