Youth Education Report
by Greg Kucharewski
(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association March 2002 Newsletter)
WATER WORKS WONDERS POSTERS
The Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee received several “Water Works Wonders” posters from Dr. Eleanor Bochenek who recently attended an environmental planning meeting. If you are having a youth event during the first week of June 2002, National Fishing and Boating Week, please let us know and we will supply your club or organization with RBFF promotional posters to advertise your event.
REQUESTS FOR YOUTH FISHING PROGRAMS
The township of Brick, NJ has requested we present a fishing program at their Reading Rally Day, May 17, 2002. Several schools in New Jersey, and as far away as Toledo, OH, have asked for fishing presentations. The Jersey Coast Anglers Association’s Youth Education Committee is inundated with requests to coordinate youth fishing projects for schools and speak to students about the award winning Future Fisherman Foundation’s “Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs” program. We are working on a plan to partner with the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife and provide presentation materials for school programs. We are also asking our membership to be patient and understand that the Youth Education Committee consists of a few JCAA members and we are trying to accommodate the needs of many. If your organization would like to check on the status of your request, please phone 732-785-9278, leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible.
YOUTH FLY FISHING CATCHES ON
Youngsters visiting the recent fly fishing exposition at Somerset, New Jersey’s Expo Center learned to tie a variety of fly patterns just like the Pros. I spoke to many vendors at the fly show and they all agreed that more youngsters are seeking to learn the art of fly tying and casting. A young boy was flexing a 9/10 weight rod and I asked him how he started fly fishing and who introduced him to the sport. He answered, “my mom.” And then he commented, “she always takes me fishing and now I am learning to saltwater fly fish.” Saltwater fly fishing is really catching on. For those of you who are just starting to tie your own flies, you might want to visit SUCCESS FLIES Web Site at http://successflies.com The materials are very easy to use and videos are available at a reasonable price.
