We are looking
forward to another successful event at Island Beach State Park on Sunday, October 7. Participating
anglers will fish from 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM. This
annual event has become a fixture of the New Jersey Fall surf fishing season for an
increasing number of surf anglers and their families.
Last year, over 1,240 anglers took
part in the tournament. This is a fishing
tournament that is enjoyed by the veteran surf angler as well as the novice. Anglers of all ages and levels of expertise take
part and can win in various categories in this tournament.
The 2000 Governors Cup winner was Joe Early of Toms River for the
largest fish caught, a 32 -5/8striped bass.
A separate Fly Fishing Division adds another dimension to the tournament. Fly fishing can take place in the surf, on the
jetty or at two bayside access points.
Special arrangements are made for
handicapped anglers. Balloon tire equipped
beach wheelchairs are available for anglers with disabilities. Volunteers will be on hand to assist any anglers
with special needs who want to fish on tournament day.
For further information and or to
make arrangements for a handicapped angler please contact Greg Kucharewski at
732-840-9197.
Various sporting organizations, state
agencies and Tournament supporters will have exhibits at the Pavilion throughout the
tournament day.
Special Note:
· Fluke (summer flounder) caught during
this years tournament will not be eligible for prizes. The fluke season is closed in New Jersey at the
time of the Governors tournament. All
fluke caught must be returned to the water immediately.
· The winner of any type of tournament
prize or award must be present at the awards ceremony to accept in person. No prize will be given at a later time.
During the past years, funds from the
tournament have been granted to Island Beach State Park for fishing equipment to use in
support of the Sedge Island Environmental Education Program. GSFT funds were used to purchase an automatic
heart defibrillator for Island Beach State Park. This
device was the first to be put in place in a New Jersey State Park. We are currently purchasing parts to upgrade and
repair the balloon tire beach wheelchairs that are available to disabled surf anglers and
other patrons of the park. Funds are also
being provided in order to purchase materials to set up a touch tank in
pavilion #1. The parks naturalist will
use this tank as part of daily presentations in explaining the shore ecology. The tank will contain various fish and marine
organisms that participants, especially children, find.
Continued funding will be granted to the JCAA Youth Education Committee for
its various presentations in conjunction with the Pathways
to Fishing and Hooked On Fishing-Not On Drugs programs.
The JCAA Youth Education Committee
promotes programs to introduce young people to fishing as a worthwhile hobby. Idle time can be used for fishing-related
activities rather than engaging in something undesirable such as drug or alcohol use.
We need your help! If you do not plan to fish in the
tournament we could use your help. We need owners of 4-wheel drive vehicles to volunteer
as beach judges to measure the fish caught by tournament contestants. Judges are vital to the smooth operation of this
tournament.
To volunteer as a judge or for more
information please contact Paul Smith at 732-899-2681 or Bob DeLeonard at 732-793-8080.
Tournament hats and t-shirts will be on sale in the
Pavilion on Tournament day! There will
be a limited number of these special items from Canyon Gear Outfitters. The hats come with a special embroidered
tournament logo for 2001. The t-shirts have a
special new 10th Annual Governors Surf Fishing Tournament design.
Pick up an entry form at your
favorite tackle shop or download a form from the JCAA Web Site. If you enter before September 1, you
will be given a special early entry gift.
The NJ Division of Fish &
Wildlife will conduct a surf fishing seminar for women on Saturday, October 6. This is the fourth year that a Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program
will take place in conjunction with the Governors Surf Fishing Tournament. BOW participants who fish in the Tournament will
have a chance to compete for a special award for the largest fish among their group.
