President's Report

by Rich Esposito

(from Jersey Coast Anglers Association June 2001 Newsletter)

The first order of business is not a pleasant one, as we send our most sincere condolences to Tom Fote and his family with the loss of his sister. Lately, Tom has been spending time in the state of Washington to be by her side. Tom, our prayers go out to you and all the surviving relatives.

I’d like to take a moment to thank Vice President Mark Taylor for substituting for me at the last monthly meeting as family obligations kept me from attending.

I’d also like to thank all those members who put forth the time and effort required in making this year’s High Roller raffle successful once again. I would also like to thank the sponsors who donated this year’s prizes, Penn Reels, G Loomis, Marado Inc., Betty and Nick’s, Grizz’s Bait and Tackle, Fisherman’s Headquarters and Bimini Bay Outfitters Performance Products, for without your donations this raffle would not be possible.

With the Fluke Tournament just around the corner, which is our largest annual function, we are looking for volunteers for many of the jobs that need to be filled, so don’t be bashful. We desperately need an additional weigh master for June 9 at Avalone Point Marina. Please call the office and leave your name. We need help manning the phones at the office evenings from Wednesday, May 30th thru the Friday night before the tournament, and from about 2pm to 5pm on the Saturday and Sunday the weekend before. I will be coordinating the schedule, so if you can donate some time, please either see me at the monthly meeting or you can leave a message at the JCAA office or at my home. We also need about 20 people to insure proper coverage at Resorts on Friday Night, June 15th. Needless to say, we need all the help we can get, and your help will be greatly appreciated. I’m sure we can all agree that a function of this magnitude needs a great deal of teamwork, so why not be a part of it?

We have received correspondence from the attorney we hired to help us with the conversion from C4 tax Status to C3, suggesting changes that should be made to our bylaws to aid with this conversion. We will be posting the changes in the next couple of newsletters, so please be on the lookout for these articles, and be sure to be present when the vote on these changes will be taken.  This conversion will have definite advantages for our association, as well as those who support us.

The annual Sports Person of the Year Dinner Dance is scheduled for Sunday, October 28th, and we are still looking for a volunteer to be this year’s chairman. I chaired the event last year and could be a great help to this year’s chairman, and I know all those who helped me last year would be willing to help out again this year, but we need someone to step forward and take the helm. I would like to have this position filled before we go on the summer hiatus, then we can go forward with the planning of this, our second largest function.

I know it is after the fact, but for those who may not be aware; there was a march on Trenton on Monday, May 21st, protesting the reduction fishing for Menhaden by out of state boats. We are attempting again to have our state legislature enact a law that would prohibit the reduction fishing in our state waters, and this march should show that we, the recreational fisherman, is organized and a force to be dealt with. We pay the state taxes; the reduction boats don’t, so why allow them to continue to take one of our most important natural resources.
