I would like to take this opportunity
to thank all the JCAA membership volunteers, contestants, sponsors, and merchants that
supported the JCAA Fluke Tournament. Funds
from the Fluke Tournament help provide needed drug awareness literature, fishing equipment
for disadvantaged youth, and aquatic education materials to promote environmental
stewardship. The JCAA youth education/drug
awareness program has grown over the years and each year we teach as many as 5,000
children and their families the joys of fishing. Our
youth fishing program is highly recognized by the State of New Jersey and we support other
state programs by demonstrating the use of partnership materials such as; the Future
Fisherman Foundations Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs program, National Fishing
Week, Pathways To Fishing, and the Elks Hugs Not Drugs program.
During the month of June, 2000, the
Jersey Coast Anglers Associations Youth Education Committee provided National
Fishing Week information to over four hundred children and plans are already underway to
purchase NFW materials for June 2001.
The Jersey Coast Anglers Associations
Youth Education Committee hosted a youth fishing clinic at the Fort Monmouth School Age
Service Center during National Fishing Week, June 3-11, 2000. Thirty-five children participated in the workshop
and learned how to make a Casting Can for fishing. Veteran
Fly Caster James Steen and NJ VietNam Veterans Chapter 12, James Monahan provided a short fly casting demonstration and
assisted children with Can Casting for the elusive Orange Ruffy Fish.
Two other National Fishing Week
events took place in Monmouth County, NJ and students learned about saltwater flies and
how to make a Clouser Minnow.
All children that participated in
National Fishing Week events received a NFW Certificate of Accomplishment.
The Jersey Coast Anglers Associations,
Youth Education Committee was invited to attend the Lanes Mill School, Brick, NJ Reading
Rally, on May 19, 2000. Greg Kucharewski
presented a seminar about job opportunities, youth fishing clubs for schools and the award
winning Future Fisherman Foundations Hooked
On Fishing Not On Drugs program. Over
60 students participated in the HOFNOD program and all students received a goody bag
filled with fishing literature, compliments of the Jersey Coast Anglers Association. Dr. Eleanor Bochenek, author of Young
Peoples Guide To Saltwater/Freshwater Fishing donated a copy of her book to each
student attending the reading rally. We had a
great time at Lanes Mill School and here are just a few of the letters we received from
students:
Dear Mr. Kucharewski, Thank you for volunteering at Reading Rally Day. I appreciate all the time you did to prepare for
us. It was a great honor. By the way remember me I was the log and I passed
out cards of the Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs pledge in the second session. I also remember the goodie bags. I will read the books soon. Thanks and have a great day. Sincerely, Jason.
Dear Mr. Kucharewski, Thank you for coming to our school for Reading
Rally Day I really appreciate it. I like how
you did that thing with the fish and the plant life and the log and how you catch a fish. It was fun being the plant life. Thanks for giving us the bag of goodies with all
the fishing books. Well, thank you very much
again that was my favorite presentation, and have a good day. Sincerely, Jeremy
Dear Mr. Kucharewski, Thank you for taking the time to come to our
school for Reading Rally Day. I really
appreciate everything you taught me. My dad
is teaching me how to fish this year. I
always help my dad and brother whenever they go fishing.
I think I am prepared to go fishing with my dad because you have taught me
so much. Sincerely Samantha.
During the month of June, we supplied
information and materials to the South Jersey Tuna Club, Manasquan Fishing Club, Saltwater
Anglers of Bergen County and the Hudson River Fishing Club Hooked On the Hudson. Interest in youth fishing programs within the
membership of JCAA is growing. If you would
like to help with our youth education efforts and offer some of your time to teach
children the joy of fishing please phone 732-785-9278 or e-mail Gkucharews@aol.com.
We will present a crabbing seminar on
